Celebration of a Kiss

“I kissed my first girl and smoked my first cigarette on the same day. I haven’t had time for tobacco since.” Arturo Toscanini

It’s said that ancient lovers believed a kiss would unite the two loved ones’ souls because the spirit was said to be carried in one’s breath. But, ah, there are kisses and there are kisses. From birth to grave, we kiss and kiss and kiss and emotions are born in each kiss.

A mother and father kiss the forehead of their first child, of each child, and their hearts fill with awe, wonder, gratitude, fear that they won’t be able to live up to this miracle, pride . . . endless emotions tied to this tiny kiss .

My grammar school alumni confessed to me recently that my younger brother gave her that earth shaking first kiss. She said, “It was my very first kiss. It was so sweet and innocent. We were twelve and he always walked me home from school,” she told me. She is now a widow and a grandmother and still cherishes that first innocent kiss.

And then there’s the lover’s kiss. The first, the second, all after them. Does anyone ever forget those? They are usually led up to with great tension and anticipation. “Look, he looked at me a different way. Quick, look away before he sees that I saw him looking!” Then, “Oh, she’s so beautiful. She’s perfect. If I ask her out, what will she say? Wow, she said “yes”. And then, “So do I kiss her good night? She just moved closer to me. She (he) must want to kiss me.” And then finally, the lovers kiss. And it’s magic. It’s a kiss like no one has ever known. The only kiss ever shared in this world.

There is the first love making kiss, the angry kiss that grazes a cool cheek, the wildly passionate “make-up” kiss, and the wedding, “Oh Lord, look what we’re doing” kiss.

And sometimes, there comes a time when a kiss means goodbye. Those kisses must last the one left behind for the rest of his or her lifetime. If we are lucky, we’ve had several of the earlier kind, lots of the middle kind — and share kisses whenever possible.

Action for the Day

Today, I’ll look forward to my next kiss, kiss everyone I can including my little puppy, and I’ll make all the kisses warm and sweet and caring.
