Love and Food
“The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for thirty years she served the family nothing but leftovers. The original meal has never been found.” Calvin Trillin cartoonist
Everywhere you look these days, you see the term “comfort food.” What’s really a hoot is that the chefs and cookbook writers are right. Depending on your early days, certain kinds of food does comfort you. If you’ve ever run to the pantry to get a bowl of cereal and cold milk at midnight, you get it. Left over pizza at 8 a.m.? Ditto.
Let’s say it’s been a hard day at work and the drive home was a rough trip. You run in the house and everyone is hungry and a bit grumpy. Quick. Grab something you liked as a kid! My favorite? Grilled cheese and tomato soup. My sweeties’ favorite? Hot cocoa and Peanut and Jelly Sandwiches. The man has a sweet tooth.
Every once in a while you just want to chuck the “breakfast, lunch, dinner” route and dig into a big plate of Macaroni and Cheese any old time. Or potato latkes and applesauce, spaghetti and meatballs, a submarine sandwich of salami and cheese. Egg rolls.
Comfort foods are comforting, body and soul, and what’s so bad about that? Oscar Wilde, a crank if there ever was one, said “After a good dinner one can forgive anybody, even one’s own relatives.”
My most unique experience as a writer was when I was asked to monitor a men’s forum. Reading all their posts was enlightening for this woman. Women would be flattered to know how much time is spent discussing — women. How to meet them, how to talk to them, how to seduce them. I wanted so much to say to men: Cook for your gal. I don’t know a single woman who would not love to have someone sit her down with a glass of something cool and let her watch him cook up a storm! Nothing is more seductive than feeding someone you love – or lust. Who could resist the flattery, the fun of being pampered and eating a man-made meal of Super Comfort foods?
Meditation for the Day
The surest path to someone’s heart is through their stomach. Yes, chocolate is a comfort food.
