Reinventing Cary

“I believe that one defines oneself by reinvention. To carve yourself out of stone.” Henry Rollins, American rock singer, author, actor

So your first twenty years or more have not been your best. So what? Maybe it’s time you think about reinventing yourself.  Everyone does at one time or another. If  you’ve been addicted and now you are not, that’s a huge reinvention.

Look at Elvis Presley.  He came from a dirt poor family. Whenhe left school at a young age, he took a job in a tool company. They eventually promoted him to truck driver. That same year, he recorded two of his songs in a little studio for $10.00 for a 10 inch acetate recording. The rest is history.

The late actor Cary Grant was considered the most handsome, suave, sophisticated man alive – thanks to his reinvention of Archibald Alexander Leach, his real name. Grant left school in England at age 14, forged his father’s signature and joined a group of athletic comedians. His biggest deal was walking on stilts. By the early 1960s, he had developed the personality of a rich, elegant, cool man of the world. A tuxeda was his usual outfit. Women world wide swooned.

Sometimes changing how  you dress, or talk or think is a great way to practice a new and better version of you. Or, sometimes you change your life by reintroducing yourself.

How do you do that? Okay, let’s say the you’re invited to a party and you behave badly. You are embarressed and would rather nevershow your face again; you also don’t want to lose your friends. So, you take a break and don’t see them for awhile. Then, when you do, you show up a new and better version of  YOU. Or you can kick start the reintroduction by sending a note of apology or some flowers. That includes your family members, by the way.  Cary would have done that.

New groups offer new fresh chances.  Even a new AA group0 can offer a break from the old and the time and encouragement to become the best and newest you.

Meditation for the Day

Never give up on YOU.  Ever. We can change our lives up to and including our last breath.

Action for the Day

Today and for as many days as necessary, I’ll think of how I would like to present myself to others and what I need to do to become that person.
