The Value of Faith

“Most people are bothered by those passages of Scripture they do not understand, but the passages that bother me are those I do understand.” Mark Twain

It was once said that if we did not have a God, we would have to invent one. Some believe we don’t have a God, not in the sense of a personal spiritual Being who watches our every move and dictates how we should make those moves. Others believe in a very literal and all-dictating God. Others have a God more dependent on His gift of free will. I question all of these assumptions daily. For the record, I am one of those who believe that Jesus lived, died on the cross and His love for us was certainly part of His life.

I am not one of many other religions in the world and so, although I try to learn about them – Buddhism, Islam, Judaism, I am a babe in the religious world. Nevertheless, I have Faith and it fills me daily with hope, love, and a belief that when I pray to become a better person, Someone is listening.

I always hope that Someone is not only forgiving but has a sense of humor. The mistakes I’ve made in my life are not funny but my belief that some would create great results is, in hindsight, hilarious. Besides, when I see the results of all of our prayers, I have to accept that not only does God work in mysterious ways, but He also has one wild sense of humor. I mean, how can we not see that when we pray for things material – like half of Fort Knox — and we get several paths to Money but not a clue as to which one to take. As in “Which number door?

Or, having got there, we don’t want to be there and would gladly trade our one thousand shares in AT&T for the spouse of our dreams? Or an island in the Aegean we share with a shepherd and fourteen goats? Or one small child to love?

And since every major faith in the world espouses Love as its prime guideline, don’t we all need to practice loving others, even across faiths?

Action for the Day

I am grateful that there is a faith that I can embrace, that can teach me love. I am not the world; I belong to a shepherd; I am just a lamb.
